Our Approach to Behaviour: Nurturing Excellence in a Caring Community
At Haydon School, our mission statement, "Individual excellence in a caring community," guides everything we do. This extends to our approach to student behaviour, where we firmly believe that clear expectations and high standards are essential for every child to thrive. We set these high standards because we know that a safe, orderly, and respectful environment allows all students to achieve their best, both academically and personally. We have clear expectations of students regarding their conduct, uniform, and engagement in learning. Poor behaviour and not following our school values and Code of Conduct are simply not tolerated as we are committed to upholding the positive learning environment every child deserves. This firm, but fair approach ensures a predictable and positive atmosphere for everyone.
However, setting high standards is only one part of our school. Our commitment to a "caring community" means we are equally dedicated to ensuring every child feels supported and a strong sense of belonging at Haydon. We know that when children feel seen, valued, and connected, they are better able to meet expectations, contribute positively to our school, and ultimately, become motivated learners. Crucially, we believe that developing strong behaviour and self-regulation skills here at Haydon is not just about school success; it's about preparing students for life. The discipline, respect, and responsibility they learn with us will be invaluable, supporting them to be successful in the next phase of their life after Haydon.
How We Partner with Parents
We understand that parents are our most vital partners in this journey. We work hand-in-hand with you to uphold our high expectations and cultivate a positive school culture. Here's how we achieve this balance of high expectations and deep care:
1. A Clear & Fair Framework
We believe consistency and fairness are paramount, and this extends to our communication with you. Our behaviour framework is crystal clear, consistently applied, and equitable for all. This means we have a simple, easy-to-understand 'Behaviour Handbook' for staff and a straightforward 'Student Code of Conduct' for students, shared openly with parents. Practical, ongoing training for all staff on how to apply rules fairly, de-escalate situations, and support students effectively, ensuring a consistent message from school to home. Regularly reviewing and refining our policy based on feedback and data, ensuring it remains effective and supportive for your child.
Student Code of Conduct
-
Show respect to members of staff and each other and follow staff instructions
-
Have excellent attendance and punctuality by attending all lessons on time
-
Be excellent learners by having all equipment and books for the day
-
Wear the correct uniform (and smart business dress in the Sixth Form) to show respect to yourself and pride in the school community
-
Walk around the school in a quiet and calm manner and ensure others can do the same
-
Enter classrooms in a calm and polite manner
-
In class, respect each other and make it possible for all students to learn
-
Not to use a mobile phone in school
-
Treat the school buildings and school property with respect
-
Refrain from behaving in a way that brings the school into disrepute, including when in the local community
2. A Positive & Inclusive Culture
We actively foster a school culture that celebrates effort, achievement, and positive choices. Our aim is to ensure every child feels valued and recognised for their contributions, in partnership with parents through a robust rewards system that clearly links to our school values, celebrating successes big and small, and communicated home. Weekly monitoring of reward data to guarantee equitable recognition across all student groups, allowing us to identify and celebrate progress with you. Regular student voice initiatives to gather feedback, ensuring your child's perspective helps us continuously enhance our positive school environment.
3. Targeted Support
Our commitment to a "caring community" means providing specific, proactive, and targeted support to students who need it most, always in collaboration with parents. We understand that some students may face additional challenges. Our approach includes: Individualised support plans (IEPs/Pupil Passports) developed in partnership with parents, alongside specialised staff training to meet diverse learning and emotional needs. Dedicated student voice sessions and social-emotional learning (SEL) programmes for identified groups, including a mentoring program focused on understanding and managing emotions. We'll keep you informed of your child's participation and progress. Proactive pastoral care through adapted curricula and mentoring for specific year groups, ensuring early intervention and support that you are always aware of.
Our Promise to You and Your Child
At Haydon School, we are committed to building a school where clear expectations go hand-in-hand with genuine care. By setting high standards and providing unwavering support, in strong partnership with you, we ensure that every child not only achieves individual excellence but also thrives within a truly caring community, where they feel a profound sense of belonging and are well-prepared for their future.
