Haydon School / Language College / Two Languages at GCSE / Life in another language?
Did you know?
These were just a few of the interesting languages facts that 50 year 9 and 40 year 11 students learnt about on Thursday 4th March when Maria Sanchez, a Languages graduate from London Metropolitan University , came to visit us to discuss how languages are important not just in school, but also for life. Pupils talked about the benefits of languages and learned how employers will often pay you more if you have a qualification in languages. We learned interesting languages facts, found out which celebs speak which languages, and discussed how languages can help you in a variety of jobs – from Actor to Zookeeper!
Speaking another language is increasingly cool these days. Barack Obama speaks Indonesian, Johnny Depp has learnt French, tennis star Roger Federer speaks fluent German, English and French, and brainbox actress Natalie Portman can chat comfortably in no less than six languages. No matter whether it’s sport, fashion, travel or acting that gets you buzzing, speaking another language is a huge advantage and will work wonders for your career!
Being a good linguist is also great way to get you closer to the things you love doing – whether that’s checking out the latest French hip-hop tracks or getting the lowdown from skateboarders in Brazil. And when you’re in Berlin or Paris, showing off your skills with the lingo will win you loads of respect from the locals (your parents will be pretty thankful too!)
Languages can be such a benefit to all young people. They open up the world and allow you to be more mobile
Knowing another language has helped me to make friends wherever I live
Working in an international environment is exciting and eye-opening and really opens up your options!
Thank you to all students who participated, www.Routesintolanguages.ac.uk and Maria Sanchez of London Met for organising the presentation, and Mrs Tubb and all the Languages staff for their brilliant support!
