Haydon School / Language College / Trips / Haydon Goes to China
In July, a group of pupils and teachers from Haydon School were lucky enough to travel to Shanghai to immerse themselves completely in the language and culture of the mysterious, exotic and hi tech city.
We joined 70 other pupils (in 40 degree heat!) to take part in a British Council language course to learn Mandarin, see the sights of Shanghai and make lots of new friends.
The amazing cityscape impressed us each and every time we saw the sun glinting from the tops of the enormous skyscrapers, which was only made more impressive by the amazing speed at which those Shanghai builders can build upwards! We were lucky enough to soak up the true Shanghai atmosphere from a river cruise down the Huang Po River, followed by an amazing experience of Shanghai’s colonial past as we strolled together down the famous Bund.
Our senses (and stomachs!) were stimulated by the delicious and exotic dishes we were lucky enough to try – we even had a dumpling making lesson! Shanghai food does play havoc on the waistline!
The 30 hours of intensive Mandarin learning were tough, but we’ve all taken a surprising amount of language home with us! Even enough to ensure that the vegetarians got vegetables and the meat-eaters got meat! We even took an exam at the end of the trip….our results are in the post…….
The exchange was all about meeting new people in an exciting and educational context, and working together with teachers and pupils from other schools made the experience even more rewarding. We were asked to perform at the closing ceremony, and we decided to write our experiences in to a poem to remember as much of the trip as we could. What an amazing experience!
