Language College

- Many extra-curricular activities were offered to students as part of languages’ enrichment, often organised by our Japanese, French, German, Italian and Spanish assistants.

- Level 7 enrichment was organised for high flying Year 9 students in Spanish, German, Italian and French: the school was delighted that students have again reached this extremely high level in languages proficiency.

- GCSE students attended a special Saturday morning speaking test practice session.

- The French and Spanish Family Learning Zones gave an opportunity for parents of Year 5 students to learn alongside their children.

- Six twilight GCSE language classes operated last year.

- Our Primary School programme enabled Year 6 children to be taught languages in local schools. At Coteford and Hillside additional masterclasses are taught to very able linguists. Almost 40 schools are involved in a Haydon programme to train primary teachers how to deliver language.

- The numbers of students taking community languages have increased considerably this year. Currently the school is teaching Gujarati, Panjabi, Chinese (Mandarin), Arabic, Hindi, Latin and Greek. Three Japanese classes are also taking place as well as Spanish and French Masterclasses for Years 7, 8 and Year 9.

- Urdu, Gujarati, Japanese and Panjabi were taught at AS level.

- In conjunction with the Specialist Schools Trust, The European Social Fund, The University of Luton and Hillingdon Adult Education, business courses for adults have been successfully organised.

- Sixth formers have been studying Mandarin and Japanese for the OCR Business Competence in Languages Certificate Course.

- Members of the staff are also making good use of the language learning opportunities this year in Italian, French and Spanish. Bilingual lessons in French have taken place in drama.

- The Language College has supported a number of trips and exchanges this year as well as international work experience in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. The History trips to Ypres and the Economics / Politics trips to France received financial support from language college funds. Year 7 went to Boulogne on day trips.

- International links have been strengthened by exchanges with Italy, France and Germany and language trips to Paris, Germany and Spain. Our third trip to China took place. We are currently developing links with schools in Beijing, Brazil and Bangladesh.

- Haydon continues to organise the Hillingdon Modern Foreign Languages Assistants’ programme and runs a support group for secondary languages in the Borough.

- Virtually every secondary school in Hillingdon has gained from our Key Stage 3 training programme, which has been widely acclaimed by participants. Haydon continues to make a strong impact in raising standards in languages throughout Hillingdon.

- A successful summer school for gifted linguists involved students from different Hillingdon Schools.

- The European Day of Languages was enthusiastically celebrated throughout the school culminating in a “travel round the world in a lunchtime” workshop attended by many students and staff.
