Headteacher's Message

On behalf of students and staff we should like to welcome you to Haydon School's website. Haydon is a Foundation School for students aged 11-18 years. We welcome students of all abilities and we seek the best from every student irrespective of ability. As it says in our Mission Statement and Aims, we are firmly committed to individual excellence, ensuring that all students fulfil their potential. Haydon is superbly equipped. In recent years a £4 million programme of new building and refurbishment has provided a new teaching block, sports hall, library, sixth form centre, science laboratories and outstanding new information and communication technology facilities.

In 1997 the school became a Language College . The funds available from this initiative are helping to ensure that Haydon is a leader in the teaching of foreign languages including French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Italian. A new teaching block for Modern Foreign Languages opened in 2004. In 2003 the school was redesignated by the Department for Education and Employment as a Language College for a further four years.

In 2004 the school was again awarded the coveted Sportsmark award by Sport England in respect of the quality of its physical education and sports provision. The award is made to schools throughout England that can show a commitment to developing sport to a high level in partnership with their local community.

In 2000 the school was awarded the Charter Mark for the excellent service it offers to the wider community. This was renewed in 2003. The school was awarded Investor in People accreditation in 2003.

In 2001 and again in 2002 the school received a School Improvement Award from the Department of Employment and Education in recognition of the significant improvement in results made by students between Key Stage 3 and GCSE.

Haydon was inspected in February 2003 by OFSTED. Inspectors described Haydon as “an effective and improving school where high standards are promoted by good and often outstanding, teaching. All students make good progress”. They also noted that students have good attitudes and behaviour, a pride in the school, a sense of responsibility and personal maturity. They noted the very good range of extra-curricular activities which enriches the curriculum in music, sport and languages. The impact of the Language College both on Haydon and the wider community was described as “outstanding”. The very good provision for information and communication technology was also singled out for special praise.

Inspectors looked at standards in external examinations. In GCSE for the last three years the school was awarded a top “A” grade, which means it is well above average compared to all schools, and even similar schools to Haydon. The same grade was given for results at A and AS level. Standards were equally high in the Key Stage 3 tests taken by 13 year-old students in Year 9: in English and science the results were described as “above average” and in mathematics “well above average”. The Inspectors noted that the overall improvement in standards from the last inspection was very good.

In 2004 Haydon was named by the Chief Inspector of OFSTED as one of the best schools it inspected in 2003.

Haydon's successes are not only confined to examinations. This website also reflects achievement in sports, drama, community involvement and other areas vital to the life of our successful school.
